Can the peer review process be improved to shorten the time in review of a journal?

Many journals, take more than 6 months and in some cases more so that a paper takes over 1 year to get to publication stage, due to lengthy review periods....

The number of articles increases quickly every year, the number of qualified reviever not. Of course I support the suggestion to shorten the review time - but how this could I happen I don't no at this moment.
