Hello fellow researchers,
I've been pondering the applicability of the Hume-Rothery rules, which are primarily established for metal alloys, to other types of materials. Specifically, I'm curious if these rules can be relevant or provide any insight when considering the formation and stability of halide perovskites. Furthermore, I'm wondering whether the Hume-Rothery rules can be applied more broadly to other ionic compounds as well. I would greatly appreciate any insights or references that might shed light on this topic.
To some extent they can definitely be for any type of solid solution, because, e.g. for the differences in the atomic/ionic radii, it has a physial basis in the strain contribution to the energy of mixing of a crystal. But like for the metallic solid solutions, it is a relatively rough rule.
