I like to know about the statistical figures and the sites of recurrence/secondary cancer development after surgical removal of tumor in breast. How its managed if this occurs?
I don´t know if there is a reliable statistic here in europe and the results are published in german. In Germany, Austria and Swiss as well each case is discussed in a so called Tumorboard with surgeons, gynaecologists, pathology, haemato-oncologists, radiology a.s.o. Those collegues discuss the best therapy for each single patient. I will look for figures, but I´m out for the weekend. Perhaps this link will show you how we work in europe and perhaps you will contact the team (mail-adress at the end of the article) to help you!
I'm not sure what your exact question is. But if you're asking about how to treat an breast cancer local recurrence, there is some recently presented data (CALOR trial) at San Antonio this past December regarding treatment of local recurrences.
In short: Locoregional recurrence treated with radical resection to R0/R1. Adj XRT was recommended (at least 40 Gy) and required if R1 resection. Then randomized to adjuvant chemotherapy versus no chemotherapy. Hormonal therapy and HER-2 directed therapy allowed afterwards. Closed early.
5 year disease free survival favored chemotherapy: 69% vs 57% (SS)
5 year OS favored chemotherapy: 88% vs 76% (SS)
Seemed to have more benefit for ER- patients on subgroup analysis.
Majority of first failures were distant failures (over 70%) vs locoregional.
Thanks for your views and links. it was very useful.
Dear Joe,
Sorry Joe, i have made a mistake in the question and i have corrected that now. thanks a lot for your link.
My question is how many/percentage is having the secondary tumor after surgical removal of primary tumor in breast. whats will be the treatment strategies in the secondary tumor and how successful the treatment strategies are?
Dear Abhinav, what you have mentioned is the tool to help medical professional for selecting the therapy(i think) . i need a stats about the recurrence of breast cancer and moreover to access the adjuvant online, i should be a medical professional but i am a pharmaceutical graduate.
There was a study published in the BMJ this year (Jeevan et al I think) looking at recurrence rates following surgery. They quoted a 30% recurrence rate following WLE...
i will check on that.. maybe i could refer you to a friend who have plenty of research regarding breast cancer surgery.... i just have to ask permission from her...
Breast cancer recurrences after surgical treatment are strictly dipendent on type of conservative surgery and anatomical recognition of lobar anatomy that is fundamental, in my opinion, for a correct, oncologically radical conservative treatment. In my experience, using these concepts, the incidence is 1% global including new tumors in the last 25 years.
Thanks for your opinion. After surgery, what can cause a recurrence of tumor in the same place(incomplete removal or is there any other ways). What kind of chemotherapy will be given after surgery?
The recurrence in the same lobe or Sector in a period of 1-3 years is due to incomplete removal of the ductal system where cancer firstly developed along the radial axis. Chemotherapy depends form the biological parameters of the cancer.
Thanks once again. I like to know the about the generalized chemotherapy pattern followed for chemotherapy......if if u have any idea about it. pls give an outline.
