I am working on the water balance model using Thornthwaite-Mather model. I have seen some solved examples for that but I have some confusions. So if anyone is working/worked on that provide me some solved example or any reference.
Hello, It would be great if somebody can provide the original Thornthwaite, C.W., Mather, J. R. paper:
Thornthwaite, C.W., Mather, J. R. (1957) Instructions and Tables for Computing Potential Evapotranspiration and the Water balance, laboratory of Climatology, Publications in Climatology.
I have been searching for it on the internet, but I did not find it.
I have searched for that everywhere (except where you got it).Undoubtedly it is not legible but I got what I was looking for. I appreciate the time you you have given.
I believe I have a copy from my college days, and an example of its use in Missouri with some watershed data conducting water balance that I did for a class project, like 45 years ago. I will definitely scan in and send, if I can find. I already tried once using a quick look through papers, and it may have been trashed, but I will look again. I have always wondered why ET was not a more popular subject as it can be a significant part of the water balance.
Something else, by reading Thornthwaite, C.W., Mather, J. R. (1957) paper that Jennifer S. Stanton attached for us I realized that water balance procedure was later developed by Mather (1978 and 1979). In many cases, researchers that use this water balance method don't refer to 1955 or 1957 papers. I even found a paper in wich Peter E. Black says that version from 1955 had same mistakes wich were corrected in 1957 version (in attachment).
Mather papers:
Mather, J.R., 1978, The climatic water balance in environmental analysis: Lexington, Mass., D.C. Heath and Company, 239 p.
Mather, J.R., 1979, Use of the climatic water budget to estimate streamflow, in Mather, J.R., ed., Use of the climatic water budget in selected environmental water problems: Elmer, N.J., C.W. Thornthwaite Associates, Laboratory of Climatology, Publications in Climatology, v. 32, no. 1, p. 1–52.
But again like in previous case this papers can't be found on the net. Plese, if somebody has these papers, or can provide the link, share with us.
Could anyone provide me a link for software that used uses both Thornthwaite PET and water budget computation....@, Sabrija, USGS software uses Hammon equation for PET calculation!
I made (in attachment) easy to use excel sheet. It calculates potential evapotranspiration (PET) and basic water balance components based on Thornthwaite 1948 version. Try it.
We have develop a computer program called "Thornthwaite Programmatically" (You can Google it). It creates a detailed Thornthwaite Water Balance Report (Water Balance Table, Water Balance Chart and Interpretation of Climatic Classification) based on Thornthwaite Climatic Classification Method with in seconds on a computer. I hope it can be helpful for people who is working with Thornthwaite Mather model.
