I am growing rice. The leaves do not look healthy. And emerging leaves are dying before they unroll. Please see the attached images. I haven’t seen this before. I am growing the rice in UC Davis mix, and gave them 2/L of a commercial all purpose fertiliser about 1.5 weeks ago. I have sprayed the plants with iron and have sprayed with white oil to control mites. They are about 5-6 weeks old. Any ideas?

I'm not familiar with rice disease/pest or nutrient symptoms. You could at least eliminate nutrients by a complete mineral analysis and that could be done in 24 h
I'm with Paul Milham on this, get a foliar analysis. Boron toxicity springs to mind immediately. Adelaide water can get noticeable concentrations of B in it (I've seen it myself), which accumulates readily in leaves. As B is not in ionic form, ultra-purification systems will not remove the B-compounds. The rice just keeps transpiring water and bulk-flow means the leaves accumulate B to toxicity. Check your water supply and maybe change resins.

I'm a rice resarcher for more than 12 years. We do with upland (rainfed) and lowland (water-logged soils) rice.
We cultivate huge hectares of rice both on-farm (at farmers' farms) and on-station (experiments and seed multiplication), but we didn't face problems like yours.
Back to your concern.
I am not clear if you are doing this in the lab or in an open field (what is the UC Davis mix?).
Newly emerging rice plants ( 7 days is an average # of days to emerge), up to 4-5th weeks had 4-6 leaves. At this stage, the rice plant is very sensitive to any addition of chemical fertilizer or any pesticide if care is not taken, EVEN NOT RECOMMENDED!!!
Dear Aaron Phillips, would you please tell us:
- the type of rice you used (variety)
- the soil type (if you have any pre-tested soil)
- the name (type), rate (amount), and production year of the fertilizer you applied
- the name and dose of the chemical you used (written on the prescription paper, or tagged on the bottle)
HAVE YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS VERY WELL?

Your rice is 5-6 weeks minus 1.5 weeks = almost 1month old. Again deduct 1 week (7 days for emergence) = 3 weeks old. Too immature. You applied these all on rice that is only 3 weeks old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your rice problem seems so obvious, you have applied more than enough of either of the two chemicals or both.
We don't apply fertilizers and pesticides at the same time for the same plant!!!
Therefore, you have over toxified the immature rice, through either:
1) you may have applied the fertilizer to the base of the plant (in contact), but actually, it has to be band applied 5cm away from the rice and should be covered with soil and watered immediately.
2) you may have sprayed the iron or white oil to the emerging leaves ('buds').
Rolling of the leaf is a symptom of toxicity (the plant getting out of water)
Please, clarify the ff:
- What is the UC Davis mix?
- 2/L of commercial fertilizer (name & rate recommended on the bag), but what is 2/L?
- What is iron spray ( you have sprayed your rice with iron)
- What is white oil ( you have sprayed your rice with white oil)

Matthew Wheal , yes that makes sense. After asking around our lab someone had similar issues with their wheat last year. I’ll get the water and the leaves tested. Do you know specifically which tests I need to ask for/who in Adelaide I can ask, if you know anyone?
