We are trying to better understand the taxonomy of liberica and excelsea to find ways to help farmers taking decisions of how to replant different fields and plots of coffee.
I may be wrong on this, but isn't what commonly is referred to as "excelsa coffee" taxonomically simply Coffea liberica var. dewevrei (= Coffea excelsa A. Chev.)?
Julius Riese we have collected several plants and would like to identify the variety of Liberica and or Excelsea. So far, we find it difficult to find any specific descriptions helping us to differentiate those plants. My question had been too unspecific and could have been made clearer.
indeed, it is very difficult to differentiate the two Coffea species C. liberica and C. liberica var. dewevrei.. I only found an article dealing with slight differences relating to the leaves (size of the leaves and the veins). But I have some doubts whether these difference are sufficient for a proper identification.
Please have a look at this publication:

Otherwise you may also differentiate both varieties genetically, see e.g.

Please also check if both varities are different relating to their phytochemical composition!
Klaus Peter Latté thank you for the input and the very interesting papers. We have collected several liberica plants over the years in different areas world wide and would like to sharpen the knowledge in this field and help this unique plant that is so massively misjudged in its potential.
