Hi, this is a question that my labmates and I have been unable to come to a conclusion on. I am asking this question specifically in the context of wide-bandgap (>9 eV) inorganic radioluminescent materials, if that helps at all.

I was under the impression that an exciton could only be generated when an ionization event occurred (ie. ionizing radiation was necessary). However, we are wondering if excitation in the visible (457 nm) could induce the production of a self trapped exciton, or if STE formation can only occur during excitation with ionizing radiation (VUV, Xrays, etc)?

Thank you!!
