There are case reports of Rifampicin being used in Primary Biliary Cirrhosis and for treatment of pruritus in Cholestatic hepatitis. But can it cause cholestatic hepatitis itself?
Rifampin is also associated with rare instances of clinically apparent liver injury accompanied by symptoms and jaundice, which can be severe and even fatal
Rifampicin induced Jaundice may be [1] just an increase in bilirubin level with normal enzymes -- [a] indirect due to impaired uptake at sinusoidal level, [b] direct due to impaired excretion by blocking the BSEP [cholestatic "jaundice" or [2] drug induced hepatitis mostly idiosyncratic due to allergic reaction [flu like syndrome] but sometimes dose related. Isolated cholestatic "hepatitis" is rare but can occur insidiously. Polypharmacy or presence of other disease may influence it.
