I cannot coat a pin because it is too small. Can I coat a large specimen and use it as disc wherein pin would be the counter face.
Yes definitely.
But, certain parameters might matter.
1. If you want to check coating performance with pin material, then it is not going to be the solution. Because the coating compatibility can only be understood after coating the pin not disc.
Otherwise it can be done.
Yes, it is no problem to change.Just do remind that the residual stress built u on flat surface and on curve surface will be different. Thus it might affecting the wear amount result.
It depends what kind of application process are you targeting...but in most of the cases it's an only way to go. I would do that ;)
Sure my colleague, try to use linear friction test and not rotational friction test.

While evaluating the tribological performance of the coating, the disc is coated and standard balls are used as the counter body. Instead of balls, pins can also be used. But the availability of standard balls (of WC, alumina, silicon nitride etc.) is better as compared to pins.
