We are building a plasma sputter coating unit with DC supply unit. SMPS based power supply is costly and so for cost cutting we are thinking of building a power supply unit from a variable transformer and then rectifying it. Will there be a problem with that kind of supply? And moreover will there be availability of 1KV @1A variable power supply with 230 v input? I am trying with some manufactures and getting a negative reply. What might be the problem in building it, if any?
You can use a transformer from a microwave oven for this, I think.

I think this is a very dangerous idea!
You want to build a DC-generator with 1000 V DC-output and 1kW power... You need a special capacitor after your 1kW-rectifying-unit to reduce the signal noise. And how can you protect you and your equipment when you get a short circuit between the cathode and the chamber?
I think it's better for you and your healthy when you buy a professional generator... and in the case of an accident this will be cheaper...
