Usually, we know the energy of particles in an electron microscope or particle accelerator with an accuracy \delta E/E ~ 10^-4 -- 10^-3, depending on the source type, its temperature, etc. I wonder if one could get a better monochromaticity -- that is, to know the energy with an uncertainty lower than 10^-4? Its probably the case for cold cathodes...
