There are some papers talking about that scopoletin helps the uptake of iron. There is no adjacent hydroxyl groups in scopoletin, but a hydroxyl and a methoxy group. I suspect that methoxy group may also act as a chelator, but there is no evidence supporting this argument.

Scopoletin can be used for the extraction of iron ions. He has a ketone, methoxy group. Ethers and ketones used for this purpose. H.Specker, W.Doll. Z. Anal. Chem.. 152. 178. 1956 .
