Can LC-IRMS system be used to measure the total amount of soil extractable carbon besides its isotope ratio?
Why go for such an elaborate technique to measure simple carbon concentration?
I suggest using a TOC analyzer instead.
Thanks for replying Thiele-Bruhn Sören, I used LC-IRMS to measure the isotope by the way i want to measure the total C as well. so i do not to measure total C again by TOC analyzer. Actually, i have meausured total C by LC-IRMS, but the value looks smaller than i thought, i asked my technician, he told me the result is fine. The first impression, i cannot accept the value, then i use another method to measure total C again to check if is was machine or method problem. then the result is acceptable actually.
So the question has been resolved.

You will not "see" as much organic C by LC-IRMS because the LC separation is selective. Some organic C compounds will not be retained on the column and will elute with the void volume, while other organic C compounds will be irreversibly retained by the column. It's also possible that some compounds present in your sample will not be soluble in the mobile phase. Hence, there is potentially a broad suite of organic C compounds that will not be visible using one generic LC separation.
