I have worked with other BSL2 bacteria before (F. nucleatum) and we used an open flame to pick colonies and inoculate cultures. If I am working with staph aureus--i.e., picking colonies to put into a solution for downstream analysis--is working with an open flame sufficient, or is it necessary to work in a biosafety cabinet?
