I would like to dehydrate the organic solvents, but we don't have the pure solvent right on hand.
Just as a quick check out here, will molecular sieve adsorb or react with the salt compositions in the electrolyte?
I know people usually dehydrate the solvents only, but I would like to know if it is possible to remove the water without affecting the salt components.
You can try this option but more resonable approach is to separate molecular sieves and salt-containing solvent. Place dried molecular sieves in (vacuum)dessicator, then solvent in dish or wide-mouth flask. It works if you have not very hygroscopic salt.
You can just distill the salt-contaminated solvent, and then use "activated" molecular sieves to dry it. I don't recommend to use purchased MS directly. Purchased one should be pre-activated by heating in vacuo for a long time, or by a microwave irradiation-vacuum dry process.
Post-truth addon))) - electrolyte will react with molecular sieves in wet solvent, of course. You can dry solvent, but electrolyte will change their composition.
Yes, MS will affect the composition. It will absorb some ions and the MS itself is composed of a lot of ions, therefore, ion exchange may occur.
