After the partial modification of a diagram or image, the author should write as : Modified after "name of the Source Author with year" (like: Stockfisch et al. 2019 )
When you wanna change anything from other sources and use you own paper, you must give the credit to the sources. In this case, you can write as like "modified after Rahim et al, 2015" or by direct citation as you cite in your paper. Even, if you make some partial changes or fully modification by your own idea which may be similar with others, you should mention that on the caption or inside the text.
So, providing that I do not have the time to contact every author (and wait for the reply), using the images and adding the correct citation would be good as well?
Yes. Especially if you cite their publication (e.g. the image is in a published paper) then you offer them a citation, so why wouldn't they be happy.
It depends. It's just a table, figure explaining a dataset, method, etc. You may properly cite it. I may use (Source: A B et al., 2000) But, for a figure such as maps, photograph, I will seek the permission from the corresponding author. Of course if you change it from the original work, you can cite it as (modified after A B et al., 2000)
