I have a filter paper (that sampled air). I need to do both soluble ion analysis(by ion chromatography) and analysis for metal (by AAS) from the single paper. How can i do that?
I can not cut the paper into two and analyze as it is too small for detection limit of both the instrument.
By using ICP-OES or ICP-MS water soluble metals can be detected by following accurate extraction methods like ultra-sonication. Sonication can be also used for extraction of water soluble ions from filter papers.
Thank you Pranamika. but we dont have ICP. we only have Ion chromatography and AAS. can i follow these steps?
1. sonicate the filter paper with water.
2. take the whole filter paper water solution and filter it.
3. take the filtrate for IC analysis
4. decicate the the filater paper and acid digest it for AAS analysis.
Can i do this?
there is a method for the quantitative method for analysis of dissolved oxygen involving Redoxreaction This method is called Winklers method for assessing involving ireduction for the indirect analysis of dissolved hydroge Immediatly I cannot think of suitable method analogus tp Winklers method or its azide modification

steps 1-3 are correct.
After you digest the filter paper use the all the solution left from the IC in the AA sample as it might have some of your metals.
Firstly What kind of filter paper you are using? Is it glass microfibre or PTFE? Second thing if you sonicate the whole filter paper I think the particles will come into the solution and very less quantity of particles will be remained in the filter paper. That will not be sufficient for quantification of the metals. Since you have very small filter paper.
The best solution is to extract the material in suitable extract ant adjust the pH of the aqueous solution at fixed pH with h suitable buffer and then extract it in separating funnel to separate two phases then back strip thre material in the aq phase and estimate it on AASI wish Iwould have known the metal so that I could have recommended the extract ant aswell as the optimum pH for the complete extraction Prof S M Khopkar

With combination of the answers given by P.Bhuyan, S.Hanna and others and for the purpose of quantification, I suggest the following addition:
Use a constant suitable volume of acidified water for sonification for successive fixed times. After each period take a drop of the extract solution by an accurate nonmetal syringe into an Electrothermal A.A. and get the output. Repeat this step until you get a constant quantity of the output . You are will be satisfied with quantitative output. You can now complete the analysis by IC. Thank You and Good Luck

I also interested to add few point on your questions (1-4) stated above.
Your filter may be of any type (PTFE, QMF, Quartz etc) you can analyze all the necessary radicals you require, follow simple steps stated below, as you told you have both IC and AAS.
1. check whether your filter paper is small (37mm, 47 mm) or big (8'X10'-TSP), if small; use the entire filter paper dissolve it in (45 ml) triple distilled water and put it, either in ultra sonic bath or soxhlet apparatus for 45 min. Take out and filter it in clean rinsed blastic bottle (polyurethane -PU) for water soluble ions then remaining residue add 15 ml (HCL 2:1) again put it for 45 min. Filter again in another bottle for acid soluble ions.
2. Use water soluble bottle for water ions identification using Ion Chromatography (F, CL, NO3, SO4, Na, K, Ca, Mg, NH4).
3. Use acid soluble bottle for water insoluble ions Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (Al, Zn Fe, Fu, Cd, etc-depending on the lamps available).
4. All values you got is in ppm convert properly in micro gram per meter cube.
In order to get more accurate results please repeat your standards after every sample and check the peaks are as usual. I think this is sufficient for your analysis..............
