As another psychologist I think the question is probably misconceived. It assumes consciousness is a 'thing' possessed by discrete individuals. After many years pondering I think it more likely that it is a dimension everything occupies and/or accesses to varying extents and lengths of time - with inanimate objects these are extremely minimal, like the third dimension of a printed letter. In other words, it is a dimension within which things happen, not a 'thing' in itself.
