ESWL helps to predict treatment outcome and consequently could be helpful in planning treatment for patients with a likelihood of a poor outcome from ESWL.
Hi, ESWL success is multi-factorial and Hounsfield units are just one indicator. I have certainly never seen such a discrepancy mentioned above. Mohamed - is it possible to get the ref to the paper? I know the dual energy CT can provide an indication of likely success as it is less affected by overlaps etc.
Hi. We've just started a study for revealing an associations between stone density and outcomes of the therapy of nephrolithiasis including PNL, open surgery and ESWL. I hope that soon we'll be able to present preliminary results. But I agree with other investigators, answered prviously that outcomes of the ESWL depend on a variety of factors, varying from size of stones and characteristics of the urinary tract to localization of stone and dietary habits.
The density of kidney lithiasis is one of the different indicators of ESWL efficency, like size of stone (> versus < 2 cm), BMI of the patient, numbers of stiones,...
High stone density (more than 1000 UI Hounsfield) seems to be more resistant to ESWL(Brushite, Whedellitte) than low density (< 500 UI).
Thats a good question. Hounsfield units are just one indicator beside many others. For example, in the lung cancer treatment, CT numbers of nodules are also an indicator/bio marker to see the effectiveness of the chemo/ treatment.
