i have a paper in this area and when we modeled the helical piles in 2D the results was not good and we had to modeled it in 3D abaqus
because some loading type have not good result and matching with real results
Dear friend, Axissymetry method is the best way to model some phenomena such as cylinder, single pile, ... If you want to model nailing, you can use 2d in plane strain and 3d method. If your helical soil nails are at vertical direction, you can use the axissymetry method just for single nail. The results of axissymetry and plane strain (2d) are variable in this case. So it would be recommanded to use 3d model for more validity.

It could be a good case for comparing with the results of 3D modeling. Plain strain has significant difference with the results of mentioned methods.
I participated in the numderical modelling of Helical piles using 3D PLAXIS Foundation as part of a research project at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. The failure modes of piles were investigated and results were satisfactory when compared with measurements. The work was summarized in the Ph.D. thesis by Yasser Abdelghany.
