I am trying to model pullout of a steel helical nail through soil in ABAQUS. During the analysis i am getting an error "Too many attempts made for this increment". I have tried applying loads in no. of steps. i have used a surface to surface contact with penalty friction. But nothing seems to work. I have even constrained my slave with tie constraints. If anyone can help me rectify it? do i need to modify BC also?

you can define steps in module Step and define there displacement to up or down and then in Module Load define what you want from abaqus...
@ Arash Rostami: thankyou sir. I have tried creating steps in module step but ad to face the same problem. Do i need to create space in the soil model to accommodate the helical shape and then connect it with soil?

Sometimes problems with contact can be fixed by adjusting contact initialization procedure. For example by specifying tolerance for adjustment zone. Description can be found in section 15.12.4 Creating contact initializations of Abaqus/CAE manual. However I'm not sure if this is applicable to your large strain analysis.
