This paper argues that Feature trees available with CAD models can be non reliable and thus goes for decomposition. But is Decomposition more reliable? (ref: "However, a construction tree does not bring ....."). Or am I missing the point?

Without the association of semantic (engineering meaning) to the shape, there is no method that can be considered reliable; neither feature tree, feature recognition or shape decomposition. Because the semantic is context dependent, it is almost impossible, in my opinion, to develop a general purpose method for practical applications.
