There are several citations that say stray dog overpopulation is positively related with the probability of acquiring rabies through dog bites. Despite this fact, it is hard to find any paper with some hard numbers about it.

High stray dog density will results in elevation of rabies prevalence in a locality because contact time between rabies infected dog and other animals(other stray dog, cattle, sheep, equines...... etc) increased so that the disease transmitted between animals and circulate in the locality particularly in dog mating season (Autumn and Spring) during which stray dogs aggregate in groups for mating
Interesting, its common sense that more dogs, more contact and more chances of rabies virus spread. However, none has come up with some sort of statistics. Why don't we try to review and make something about it? interested?

I´m concerned about the fact that several countries recognize the stray dog overpopulation as a public health problem as an empiric one, but hard numbers aobut it are difficult to reach. I have found only one report in my country (México) about dog rabies vaccination that shows through time the increase in general dog population. The relation is more complicated, since it depends on several other factors such as vaccinated population biomass, dog population dynamics ... it seems to be complicated and it's a matter of models. I advice you to contact Dr Kharmachi Habib from Pasteur Institute of Tunis, Tunisia. He is specialist in rabies epidemiology and can be of great help.
There are relation between stray dog density and rabies.As rabies transmitted from rabid dog to other dog or to human.Rabies maintained and spread in two ways: urban rabies and sylvatic rabies. The principal reservoir of rabies in the most of the world is the dog.
