There is a very short journey from the oral cavity to the heart valves through blood vessels. Where bacteria can colonize making the valves less efficient in doing their job.

Surely once bacteria get into the blood, they will access all parts of the body via the blood vascular system? If distance is a factor, would not spread via the lymphatic system be more pertinent?
