I would like to synthesize Fe2O4 ferromagnetic nanoparticles around 10-20 nm in size. Can any experts in the same topic suggest to me the method to synthesize the Fe2O4 nanoparticles, if possible suggests some articles.
Co precipitation is the easy and simple method to synthesis these nanoparticles [ if u doesn't care much on mono dispersed particles] else you have to follow hydro thermal or other advanced methods , By varying the FeCl2 and FeCl3 ratio you can tune the particles from Fe3O4 to y-Fe2O3 with addition of NH4OH or NaOH . Also , if the synthesized particles were less than 25 nm then it may exhibit superparamagnetic property rather than ferromagnetic . The size and shape of the particle can be tuned at different temperature and atmosphere.
If you want narrow size distribution and well dispersion, Thermal Decomposition is by far the best method. Although it render nanoparticles only soluble in non polar solvents , there are several methods to "pulling" them to a water environment if such condition is necessary. There are several thermal decomposition methods and they differ in the type of solvents and precursors. I suggest the following: Chem. Mater., Vol. 19, No. 15, 2007.
