My recipe works great for extracting whole protein from most tissues including liver. But so far it has only been used for 2D-Gel analysis. It should work for you if there is no special requirements for proteomics sample preparation.

Liver has loads of proteinases and fat. Phenol extraction is cheap and should work pretty well. Also praying wouldn't hurt.
