Emotional intelligence (or understanding) is essential - not just for the individual, but for social groups of all types. The nature of human engagement/interaction has changed dramatically. Emotional intelligence used to be communally socialized from childhood, but that's quickly dissipating. Also, the overly sensitive PC and protective but less engaged parent-child, child-child, and semi-stranger-child relations coupled with increasing overall fear in America is another part of the problem. Thus, it's a critically important role. However, it's not something you can teach in a classroom, textbook or powerpoint slide show. Needs experiential learning. Hard to do with all the liability and "safety/safe space" policies and beliefs these days. Look at the increase in anxieties and antidepressant use over the years. So, what's the best program/solution?
Emotional intelligence (EI) or emotional quotient (EQ) is the capacity of individuals to recognize their own, and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different feelings and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior.
Studies have shown that people with high EI have greater mental health, job performance, and leadership skills although no causal relationships have been shown and such findings are likely to be attributable to general intelligence and specific personality traits rather than emotional intelligence as a construct.
