I am looking for studies about expert blind spot hypothesis particularly in science. Also I am wondering if someone has researched expert blind spot hypothesis in peer tutoring?
Christoph, I can intuit what you are talking about, but I've never heard it named as such. Can you provide an initial citation for the concept? Is this similar to the "file drawer" problem (in which findings that are not statistically significant or don't fit clearly into the contemporary literature in some way don't get published)? Or is it something else?
I recall reading a (technical?) report on something called the 'expert blind spot' some time ago. It looked at the clash between expert knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge (as in Shulman's work). As I recall it was reporting that people with expertise in a particular discipline prefer to arrange the teaching of that knowledge according to the structure of the discipline than the needs of the learner. Though I think this report was on mathematics rather than science. I know it was an American study, but at the moment cannot recall which university. I may have it buried in my reference database and will try and look it up later. That said, is this the hypothesis you mean?
James, thank you, that is exactly what I mean. I know studies about this topic in the domain of mathematics, but not in science, which is my field of research - that is why I asked. However, I am still interested in the technical report you are talking about.
One of the reasons I am interested in the expert blind spot hypothesis is that this seems to be one of the very rare examples where the interdependence of two cognitive constructs is analyzed in a more elaborated way than just globally, like construct B globally benefits from construct A. Content knowledge might support pedagogical content knowledge and even teaching quality to a certain point - but too much content knowledge could even have a negative impact.
I am surprised at how many studies there are out there. My brother is a math teacher, so he deals with it a lot. I had not heard the term used in the social studies before. PDF]Expert Blind Spot: When Content Knowledge and ...
