I'm biologist and worked with chemistry of natural compounds during my master degree. Our study had focus between Chemistry with Genetics, particularly on Mutagenesis area.

So, assess the effects of natural compound at DNA (i.e. micronucleus test, comet assay, SMART test in Drosophila melanogaster, Ames test, Foci crypt aberrant, etc)can explain several pathways. It's is a potential field to research compounds of plants.

I am a Pharmacist and currently doing PhD in natural products. Actually Drug discovery covers a wide range of fields. I do agree with your special interest in chemical biology. Actually what ever compounds we discover from natural sources it has to be in use as a medicinal agents. And thus we need to know their biological activity potential and furthermore their possible mechanism in biological system. There are thousand of compounds are there but how many of them have been studied for biological activity?? If we don't know their potential then what is the benefit of discovering new compounds? To me, you may focus on Synthetic medicinal chemistry along with CADD and Pharmacological study. I would suggest when you study the activity you can collaborate with pharmacologist and molecular biologist to study the mechanism of your compounds for a particular activity (eg. antimicrobial, anticancer, neurogenesis etc.)
