I'm working on a project which involves film forming by filtration. The problem is that films formed on the membrane always have the pattern of filter media beneath the membrane. Did anyone deal with similar problem? Can anyone recommend a good filter media that is has the minimum imprint problem?
You may try to use abhesive (i.e. "repulsive") filter medium, perhaps porous PTFE - but even then mechanical "imaging" of the surface structure is almost unavoidable. Or you may try to use glass filters with very fine pore distribution. What is the film former you are using? What is the liquid medium? What is the expected smoothness of the film surface? Is it not possible to solve the problem with film casting?
There are PTFE filter media from Chemplast. It is fibrous but heat treated so that the fibers are "welded" to each other, they have an effective prosity of about 5 micrmeters so the "imaging" effect will be very small. If that is too rough you can try Goretex filter material with a finer pore size, that material is available down to .02 micrometer pore structure. Eli Smyrloglou consulting LLC www.ihmarketsense.com
