We have had success making self-assembled gold nanoparticle monolayers on glass through an amine-silane layer. We're exploring a new protocol, which requires a carboxylated glass surface, and wondered if anyone had knowledge of a carboxylate-silane molecule that will reliable self-assemble on treated glass surfaces? Our goal is to have a surface that can then covalently bind EDC/NHS-activated molecules.

This question I see in the third or fourth time on the site - it can be found by keywords. One of the solutions - treatment by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and then by succinic anhydride (-COOH on surface) or with S=C=N-(PEG)-N=C=S (reactive -NCS on surface)

Hi. Just to confirm. If i have to produce a surface on top of a glass slides with silane component with terminal carboxylic group, will the above protocol be still applicable

We found that carboxylated PEG silane molecules served our purposes better than carboxylated hydrocarbons. If you check out the appendix in my PhD these (on my RG profile), it has the specifics of these molecules and protocols.
I have used 3-(triethoxysilyl) propylsuccinic anhydride and found good results for silicon wafers.
Kallol- Since i need to attach a sheet with amino terminal to carboxy bearing silane on surface of glass, do u think 3-(triethoxysilyl) propylsuccinic anhydride would be useful?
Adam- Thanks for a quick reply. However i couldn't locate carboxy silane protocol in your thesis. Is it CTPEG bearing surfaces as i am looking for CT bearing silanes. Thanks again for the help.
Hmm, actually I just realized my CTPEGs went on a gold surface, not on glass. However, here's a vendor that sales silane-peg-carboxyls.

We found that on our gold surfaces, the best approach was to use a longer chained PEG for the functional moiety (eg maybe 5000K spacer) and mix with an inert shorter chain PEG (1000K spacer methyl headgroup silane). We'd pre-mix these in certain portions (maybe 10:1, 100:1, 1000:1 of non-functional:functional) and then silanize the surface. (This asssumes miscibility of your reagents). As such you can control the density of your carboxyl headgroups. Typically the less dense, the less overall charge of your glass. Too many carboxyls will make your surface electronegative, even after you've bound something else to the carboxyls.
