I'm writing a paper in which we are comparing the response profile of various types of biosensors, and I'd like to do a collage image that shows the response curves for the various systems in subfigures A, B, C, D.
The problem is, I have found perfect examples of published curves for each system, but don't have the equipment to reproduce any of them. Therefore, I'd like to ask for permission to reprint them. What is the protocol for this? I know that they become property of the journal in which they were originally published, and so who would I need to contact (eg authors or journal)? Are certain journals more amenable to sharing than others?
I found this on Elsevier.com (http://www.elsevier.com/about/policies/author-agreement/obtaining-permission):
"From whom do I need permission [to reproduce any substantial part of a copyrighted work. This includes any text, illustrations, charts, tables, photographs, or other material from previously published sources]?
Permission must be sought from the copyright owner and/or rightsholder. In most cases this will mean contacting the publisher of the original work. The publisher usually has the exclusive right to grant the permission whether or not copyright is owned by the publisher.
If the rightsholder requires that the credit line be in a specific format, this must be followed exactly, e.g.:
Print the required copyright credit line on the first page on which the material appears:
"Reprinted from Wear, Vol. 139, W.S. Moon and Y. Kimura, Wear-preventing property of used gasoline oils, pp. 351-365. Copyright 1990, with permission from Elsevier."
Such notice must be visible any time a user accesses any part of the material and must appear on any printed copies an authorized user might make."
So, I would contact the Editor. Unless you find some under the Creative Commons licence with the right to reproduce (http://creativecommons.org/). Hope it helps!
