I plan to use the osmometer primarily for measuring the molarity of internal solution after it has been prepared, to make sure it is near 300 mOsmolar. The individuals in my lab will probably need to use this device only (approximately) once per 2 months. Any help is appreciated!
We use the Wescor (now Elitech) Vapro osmometer. It isn’t cheap, and we also use it only occasionally for internal. But when you need something, you need something. Some people check their external solution every day and adjust accordingly, but we don’t.
I personally like freezing point osmometers for electrophysiology ACSF and internal solutions for whole-cell recordings; they are extremely robust and accurate, and the simpler models are relatively affordable compared to vapor pressure ones.
Currently we use a Fiske 210 (though I think it has been discontinued), and I previously worked on a an instrument from Löser (loeser-osmometer.de; I am in no way affiliated with them). Both of these freezing point instruments work great, though my favorite is the Löser, as it works with regular Eppendorf tubes, whereas the Fiske requires specific, expensive tubes.
I also worked on a Wescor vapor pressure instrument, which was fine, but required more frequent calibration and and appeared to me slightly less consistent.
One advantage with the vapor pressure osmometer is the facility to take the sample which is very small. It needs frequent calibration.
anyone have experience with the osmette 6002 or any of the precision systems osmometers? I'm working in the confines of approved vendors
I have experience with freezing point and vapor pressure, we have had both in the lab. Precision systems are fine and will last for ever (as will all osmometers). The Osmette 5004 might be a better choice. I prefer the Advanced Instruments freezing point osmometers for a daily patch-clamp solution check. The Wescor vapor pressure is best for small samples (few µl) of urine or plasma.
