I am conducting semi-structured interviews, field observations and focused group discussions for my study. I would like to know the most suitable, user-friendly and convenient software for such type of data analysis. Many thanks in advance!
Most qualitative data management Softwares are user-friendly and different qualitative researchers prefer different ones over the other. Personally, I think they are basically the same, all you need is to apply yourself to learn how they work. The most common ones used are Nvivo and Atlas.ti.
Remember that these Softwares, by themselves, do not analyse the data as in the case of quantitative software, but they are valuable in organising your data and provide useful tools for classifying and organising the data analysis process. They can be very useful especially when handling huge qualitative data sets and when data is obtained from various sources as it is in your case. The primary tool for qualitative data analysis remains the researcher or investigators who analyse the data based on the objectives of the study.

I get it! Many thanks for the tips. I will go for NVivo. It will be interesting to see how a software could help thematic analysis. All the best and thanks again for taking time to write.
I prefer NVivo. You can run word frequency analyses which can be helpful. Also for thematic analysis you can create thematic structures in a diagram or in the way your organise your nodes
I agree with what is stated above. I have extensively used NVivo and have found it more than favourable with regards to its multiple functions - please see a paper I wrote relating to my reflections whilst using NVivo in terms of data analysis and the pitfalls the researcher can encounter as the 'analyst'. The paper is available on my profile page.
I agree with Ferdinand C Mukumbang that they all do pretty much the same thing, although in slightly different ways. If you like NVivo, then go for it and don't worry that you are missing much in any of the other packages.
Appreciate all your kindest inputs. I understand that NVivo could be a potential as my research is a mixed method with a qualitative component playing a dominant role. I guess NVivo Plus is the solution.
I will certainly read your paper Michael. Many thanks for sharing!
Have a look at atlas.ti. You can download a cost free trial version (all features, but limited data quantity). Do not underestimate the competence which is required to work with qualitative data analysis software. Using them at a high level, makes it really worth working with them. If you invest time now in your decision and in your training, you will gain a lot in the long run.
Try Atlas.ti. you can get a trial from http://atlasti.com/free-trial-version/. also get to YouTube and download some interesting videos on how you can use atlas.ti . if you need some more help, please get in touch with me
With regard to mixed methods, all of these programs will claim they have the capacity to do mixed methods, but they have a very specific and limited meaning for that claim. In particular, if you have numerical data for each of your participants (background variables etc.), they will allow you to use that data in your searches.
Further to my recommendation above, please note the pros and cons of using software tools as per Sinkovics et al, 2008, pp. 694-695.
Sinkovics, R., R, Penz, E. and Ghauri, P., N (2008) Enhancing the Trustworthiness of Qualitative Research in International Business, Management International Review, 48, 6, pp. 689-714.
Many thanks for your kind inputs. I shall start with NVivo and see how it goes. Many thanks for sharing the useful links to understand the functions, pros and cons of software application in qualitative data analysis. Appreciate your time!
I am a great fan of NVivo - it is very user friendly, allows you to extract models from the themes or categories you derive you can easily extract different matrix. I even use it for a literature review when I have to handle a great amount of paper and book sources. So my recommendation is to continue with it. Good luck!
Thanks so much for your kindest response over my question. I see that there are three stages, “Starter” “Pro” and “Plus” in NVivo. What would you reckon for a PhD student to analyse PhD research data? Guess it's pro.
