I want to carry out thin layer chromatography for phospholipids.. For that I was going to use Whatmann LK5 thin-layer chromatography plate. I asked many Manufacturers about the availability of this plate but as per their reply they have discontinued its supply..
Can anyone please suggest me an alternative for Whatmann LK5 thin layer chromatography plate which is efficient enough to separate phospholipids by TLC.

Hi, I think LK5 was a silica gel with certain pore size (10-12 um, 150 A pore size?); if you do not have I think you can replace with other type silica gel. I have tried to insert "phospholipids" in TLC Camag Data base, I found 153 hits, maybe you can select from these hits some methods that are suitable for your work

As per Whatman, the letter L is for a preadsorbent layer usually composed of diatomaceous earth. This preconcentrates each spot into a narrow band at the origin of the plate. K (short for Kieselgel) is the symbol for silica gel this is this is followed by a number designating the pore size. An LK5 plate is a 10-12 µm silica gel with a pore size of 150Å with a preconcentration zone at one end of the plate. A K6 silica gel has a 10-12 µm particle size, with a pore size of 60Å; this is the more common pore size for TLC silica gels. I suggest you give the LK6 plates a try; you may not need the molecular sieving action afforded by the larger pore size in the LK5 material to achieve the desired separation. I would use the Whatman brand if possible since the binders and other additives to the thin layer plate should be the same for both the LK5 and LK6 plates. The EMD Merck Millipore equivalent to Whatman LK6 would be catalog number 1118450001 TLC Silica gel 60 glass plates with concentrating zone 2.5 x 20 cm.
