In India, prevalence of TB including MDRT is very high in slums like Dharabhi. These are also hubs of large number of unvaccinated and under-vaccinated children that make these places vulnerable to large measles outbreaks. Given such a scenario, measles with its depressing role on CMI, has the potential to flare up TB infection in children.
Morbilliviruses, including measles virus, are immuno-suppressive. Virus attacks lymphocytes and viral proteins also cause immune suppression. This is a well known phenomenon and you will find plenty of publications. Secondary bacterial invasion post-viral infection is common and activation of latent TB is comprehensible.
Post-measles pneumonia & diarrhoea, corneal ulcers, encephalitis are common and well documented. Any report on TB?
