I am in search of experiences of rooms in hospitals for logopedic treatment and training. In some countries not only one-to-one sessions take place, but group training as well, in particular in the case of laryngectomees, people who [because of throat cancer] had their larynx removed, resulting in the loss of normal speech. My special interests are the required and realised acoustical properties of these rooms for group training.

Hello, I'm not an expert for hospital acoustics for logopadic treatment, but have some experience in class room acoustics. Maybe the same acoustic conditions are useful as for students with a foreign native language.
Try to keep the rooms not too reverbarent (a reverbaration time between 0.4 and 0.6 seconds in a 30 m² room would be a suggestion), to provide a high direct to reverberant ratio. On the other side you don't want an acoustical dead room, because of the needed support of the speaker by very early reflections within first five milliseconds which are combined psychoacoustically to the direct sound. In investigations and literature research we found out, that hard reflections of walls with high amplitude which arrive more than ten milliseconds after the direct sound can decrease the intelligibility.
Another problems of some class rooms, lecture halls and maybe rooms in hospitals are the geometric conditions. In square rooms with hard walls the sound reflection can flatter between parallel walls and also decrease intelligibilty. Try to diffuse sound at these walls by using scattering objects like coat racks or acoustic diffusors.
If the room is too reverbarant, set up absorbers at the boundary of the ceiling and the higher part of the back wall, if you have group conditions like at ex-cathedra teaching.

André, thank you for your -indeed- general information. It is, however, the specific experience with logopedics for laryngectomees I am looking for: examples of rooms in practice, a priori demands of users and the satisfaction of logopedists and patients after completion.
