I would appreciate getting some guidance on sulphur detection methods for biological samples. I am specifically interested in marine biota. The interest stems from the fact that 210-Po is analog to sulphur and I want to confirm the sulphur content in samples where I have high 210-Po.
I would suggest, depending on the total S concentration, to look at CHNS analysis equipment, where the sample is combusted and then chromatographically separated and detected. We measure sulfur contents in biomass samples, but also fossil fuel samples using a FlashEA 1112. If there is a large fraction of inorganic sulfur present, it is possible to add vanadium pentoxide to the sample in order to ensure a complete combustion to SO2.
However, i can't say what the effect of a high 210-Po concentration could be regarding radioactove contamination of the apparatus.
Whatever is the form of sulpher,fuse the sample with sodium and extract sulphide of the sample moiety,oxidise it to get sulpher in oxidation +6 and not in +4 as in sulphur dioxide.Use LC/MS to separate and estimate sulphur or use traditional volumetric method to estimate sulphur.

Saif, have you tried lead acetate quanitative stripps to the sulphide form of oxidized sulphur and later extracted the analyte for confirmation of quantity of sulphur.
we relay on wavelenghth dispersive X-ray fluorescence, definitively the most accurate method
I'd recommend that you connect with Dpt of biological chemistry in university of Michigan school of medicine, Ann Arbor; they have already published a couple years ago a method of in vivo and in vitro method. Good luck;)
I suggest you that after digested your sample in microvawe with HNO3+H2O2 you cam detect with ICP-OES or ICP-MS.
