I fabricated Al alloys by casting and I would like to achieve heat treatment for Al-Ti and Al-Zn alloys and composites. Can anyone help to select the proper temperature and time?
The time of heat treatment depends on the thickness of specimen. The temperature depends on the chemical composition and also to the final properties you expected.
You question is so general that I am not able to determine a appropriate thermal cycle.
If you know the compositions of both alloys(Al-Ti & Al-Zn),So,from the binary phase diagram of the alloys, you can determine the corresponding phase of the alloys with respect to the composition. Then you can determine the temperature and time for the heat treatment.
DSC is best to do research to know the history of the thermal the alloy and then select the heating temperature, depending on what you want to receive.
You have to go through the phase diagram of the alloys so you can get an idea of phase and DSC analysis gives you the data which you can compare with phase diagram information.
Just run the DSC test on the sample to estimate the lowest melting point out of all the phases present in sample. 10-15 C less than that temp. is the usual practise to HT the sample.
