Dear researchers,
I am pursuing my masters degree in Structural engineering and after this I would like to pursue PhD degree in one of the best universities all over the world. I would like to know the step by step procedure for applying to such universities and DO's and Don'ts while applying. Also it will be better if you suggest me best universities in civil engineering. My research area of interest is broadly structures and specifically earthquake resistant techniques for structures or Structural optimization or RCC structures or precast prestressed concrete constructions.

Based on my experience the first rule of thumb is to manage your supervisor. It means that although you're looking at the possibility of doing your studies at the high-ranked university, it's more important for you to get the right supervisor from 'that' university. In order to ease you managing your supervisor, some of the right criteria for your supervisor are as follow:
(1) Your PhD research should fall in one of your supervisor's research expertise;
(2) If possible, your supervisor is not someone who holds a very high position in the university like Principal, VC, Pro-VC etc.;
(3) He/She has a research team that can support your research activities and has access to research grant for funding when necessary;
(4) And most importantly, you will always have time to sit down and discuss your research progress with your supervisor for at least once a month.
