I went through FEMA-356 and FEMA-440 for target displacement and I cam across the formula as well but it wasn't helpful as i'm not able to understand it completely and I wasn't able to find all of the coefficients. It would be great if i can get a solution for that.
SeismoStruct and SeismoBuild automatically calculate the Target Displacement of a structure according to ASCE 41-17 (which is same procedure with FEMA-440).
Hi dear. You have two ways to calculate the target displacement of a structure. First you can use a formula in FEMA-356. In this formula you should have period of the structure and spectrum acceleration. (Sa=AB)
Now you should determine the coefficients of (C0, C1, C2, C3).
If you take a look at FEMA-356 it has explaind how to calculate these coefficients. Some of them has tables and some of them should be calculated by formulas. If you have the stress yield of the structure, period and Sa it's realy easy to calculate the coefficients.
Another way is that you should calculate the pushover (static nonlinear analysis) and plot the pushover curve. Besides you should plot demand curve. These two curve interfere each other in a point this point is dissplacement target.

An equivalent SDOF system for each mode is subjected to the specified ground motion to determine the target displacement for each mode. The SDOF system is controlled by a few modal properties which are determined from the hysteretic behavior of the structure. The maximum structural responses are then determined at the target displacement for each mode. These individual responses are then added by a modal combination rule to obtain the overall structural responses (See MPA, Chopra and Goel 2001)
