I have used chitosan as an additive in papermaking and I need to find if the chitosan has remained in paper structure or not. I think this method can indirectly lead us to work on chitosan which has Nitrogen Groups.
Using Micro kjeldahl method, you can determine total nitrogen content of samples. In the method, whatever it is the source, nitrogen in the source is converted to inorganic nitrogen. In addition to the nitrogen in chitosan, other nitrogen also is converted to the inorganic form. So, in addition to the sample which is added chitosan, you can run several controls (Paper without chitosan) to get idea about the availability chitosan nitrogen. If there is a significant deference between control and sample, you can say additional nitrogen came from chitosan. But, you can’t say about actual structure of the nitrogen (of chitosan) in the paper. Some time it may change.
