Actual use of nano based Phase Change Materials (PCM) for large scale industrial cooling and energy storage applications will be of interest to me. May please share your valuable experience.
The choice of material depends on energy storage requirement and the operating temperatures for storage and extraction. Paraffin is a phase change material used in solar thermal energy storage. I don't understand what is meant by nano based PCM. Clarify.
Nano additives are being used for heat transfer improvement. I am exploring possibility of PCM additives in the form of nano particles in fluids (say cooling water systems) to improve heat transfer, temperature range 40-50 deg C.
I have not worked with "nano additives". The dispersion of the additive in water becomes two phase. The challenges are many. To identify a suitable PCM, the base liquid and their properties. I have come across water in oil emulsions being tried in I.C engines. The process of mixing paraffin and water may be tried in a similar manner. The idea is interesting and worth trying.
PCMs for industrial cooling has got a lot of potential. A Company in Chennai has got a PCM based storage facility for their AC application. Pls. refer to my paper published in the International Journal of Thermal Sciences 84 (2014) 184-195 for a brief background on PCMs suited for a few promising applications. Apart from that there are quite a good number of papers on the same. You can write to me at [email protected] for further discussions should you need.
Thanks Dr Laxmi Narasimhan; I am specifically looking for nanobased PCMs. Literature in the form of articles available mostly regarding lab scale studies. My interest is industrial level application of nanobased PCMs.
Dear Mr. Jayan, Your pointing out of the lab scale studies are very correct as far as the publications are concerned. Personally I recommend you to visit the website of FlatICE - PCM manufacturers for their real time projects and few related details. I hope you would be benefited by that. I am also working on a real time work for large scale application. But It may take some time in the future for any sharing of info.
PCM has a number of cold storage applications like chilled goods transport, beverage vending, fresh produce transport, ice-cream vending, marine refrigeration, medicine storage, transport containers, truck refrigeration and vaccine transport. PCM can be used in cold storage either by direct immersion in the storage container or through macro-capsules in pouches. Microcapsules involve lower risk of material leakage, and thus of contaminating food and pharmaceutical items.
