I am curious about the drones being used in Ghana for transporting vaccines to remote areas. I have heard claims that each trip costs less than 20 Euro and can carry up to 2000 doses (1,7kg) of vaccines. I am interested in any additional information or similar experiences with transport drones in difficult accessible areas. Can anyone elaborate on the drone technology used for transporting vaccines in Ghana?

Zipline Medical Delivery System has been in operation in Ghana since April 2019. Initially met with some resistance and cynicism, the Zipline service has proven efficient and impactful.
The main concept of the Zipline service was to provide quick and simple medical supplies to remote areas or difficult to reach health facilities, usually cut-off by unfriendly topography, bad roads or irregular supply lines. The main medical items targeted were blood for transfusion ( especially for maternal and child health emergencies) as well as some essential medications.
The concept works through a main station serving up to an 80-km radius ( usually how far the drones can fly and return without losing power). The first station was set up at Omenako, in the Eastern region and since then, 3 other centres have been set up across the country.
In the time since their inception, the drone medical delivery services have adapted to serve numerous purposes in medical logisitics delivery, including the delivery of PPEs, routine vaccines and the latest, COVID-19 vaccines.
Prior to their establishment in Ghana, the Zipline drone service had been successfully launched in Rwanda in 2016, where it continues to augment medical delivery to remote and underserved areas.
Even though Zipline is a US-based company that makes its own drones, it began its medical delivery program in Africa ( in Rwanda) and only later did it pilot drone medical delivery in the US. US operations currently include delivering prescriptions from providers such as Walgreens and dropping emergency medical supplies to remote US locations.
Zipline will continue to expand and has already signed agreements with a number of US states and some states in Nigeria, such as Kaduna State.
