Fish is considered as a safe and healthy food and double safety is ensured by the organic fish products. The brackish water area available in India for shrimp farming offers good potential for organic farming. This includes the vast traditional prawn filtration fields located in West Bengal (46100 ha) and Kerala (10700 ha). The traditional type of prawn filtration system is highly environment-friendly as they use no chemicals, drugs or antibiotics. Organic aquaculture ensures that the farming activity is in harmony with the nature, with due care for the good health and welfare of the cultured organisms. Organic products have become very popular of late due to the rising awareness in health and food safety. There is a growing demand for organic products in the global market, especially in Europe, USA, China etc.
In the south-western coastal area of Bangladesh an organic shrimp project called OSP is running by a WAB trading. As you know the shrimp farming pattern in Bangladesh is a family driven small scale polyculture system with minimum inputs (feed and fertilizers) and farmers are easily adapted this technology. The post-harvest management and establishment of shrimp collection centre in the remote part of the area is the major break through of this programme.
