The GENLINMIXED analysis covers a wide variety of models, from simple linear regression to complex multilevel models for non-normal longitudinal data but it is difficult to run and analyze.

It takes you through a large number of examples - binary , ordinal, counts, - both through the GUI and syntax.
I too found the interface rather confusing.
@Kelvyn: Maybe it's a generational thing, but I find the GUI dialogs for many of the newer SPSS procedures less than intuitive. A few good examples of the command syntax are often more useful, I find! ;-)
p.s. - I have the book by Heck et al., but have not yet had time to look at it. Great to hear that they've included syntax. So often, books of that sort do not.
