I cannot tell you anything about kits, but I can recommend these two protocols:

With them you can get the really short molecules from ancient samples. And they work fine for input amounts between 25-50 mg.

I see, you don't take necessary care to details. Which are VERY important and may be critical when you deal with realy bad quality samples...

you can use the manual method -- Phenol chloroform isoamyl alcohol .
