This research will consider the contribution that building design elements for mitigation of bushfire can make to the domestic home’s overall sustainability outcome. Contribution to this gap in research will enhance the knowledge of how to achieve an integrated design response. The research is needed to combine the fields of bushfire construction and sustainable architecture leading to a better understanding by practitioners.
I am keen for people's thoughts on the topic and any link to research in the field that can inform my approach to this research.
I have been a resident in two Mediterranean winter-rain areas (Italy; California) and currently reside in the semi-arid African summer-rain bush. In Italy, you can learn a lot from studying where houses were located over the centuries or even millennia. In California, Africa and Australia the history of houses is probably too short.
My first observation is that land use zoning, garden design and management need attention. Maybe next is: where to place the house on the plot. Finally, mountains and plains provide very different bush fire environments. All major predictive fire models are for plains. Fires in mountains are generally not well understood.
