Sulfate radical based advanced oxidation process is a hot topic in environmental remediation. Usually, it was generated by activation of persulfate or peroxymonosulfate.

Recently, transition metal/sulfite/O2 system was found to be able to generate sulfate radicals.

Can activated carbon replace transition metal as catalyst? Is this promising if the use of transition metal can be avoided?

Thanks!
