I have doubts if the hetrozygous genotype of an SNP results in substantial lowering or increase of expression of a gene compared to the homozygous types?

It is known that hetrozygous genotypes produce an intermediate amount when compared to hetrozygous. I mean the concept is understood. But what about this concept of differential allelic expression.
